La incontinencia urinaria, caracterizada por pérdida involuntaria de orina que repercute negativamente en el estado de salud, funcionalidad y relaciones sociales de los individuos, es un síndrome geriátrico frecuente muchas veces no diagnosticado. El objetivo de esta guía es proporcionar recomendaciones basadas en la mejor evidencia científica disponible, para el diagnóstico y tratamiento de la incontinencia urinaria en las personas adultas mayores, en el primer nivel de atención médica institucional. La información de los artículos seleccionados fue analizada e integrada por dos médicos familiares, un geriatra, un gerontólogo y dos expertos metodológicos en elaboración de guías clínicas. Para verificar su comprensión y aplicabilidad y llevar a cabo los ajustes necesarios, se realizaron cuatro talleres con 35 médicos que laboraban en el primer nivel de atención médica. La guía clínica resultante permitió al médico de atención primaria identificar el tipo de incontinencia urinaria y dar recomendaciones de manejo no farmacológico y farmacológico, e identificar los casos que deben ser referidos para atención especializada.
