Abstract

Objective: to evaluate stages of change for physical activity behavior and their relationship with over-weight in high-school adolescents.

Methods: cross-sectional data were obtained from 549 adolescents. Physical activity and stages of change for physical activity behavior were estima-ted by questionnaire. The relation between these stages and overweight was estimated by multiva-riate logistic regression.

Results: participants were 52.8 % female, 31.3 % belonged to a sport team and 25.9 % were over-weight. Males performed more vigorous physical activity than female. Stages of change for physical activity behavior were distributed as follows: maintenance 37.2 %, contemplation 29.9 %, action 17.7 %, preparation 10.0 % and precontemplation 5.3 %. A non-smoking male with adequate weight belonging to a sport team was more related to a maintenance stage.

Conclusions: a high percentage of the adolescents, mainly females, were in the first stages of change for physical activity, which means they were inactive. Overweight adolescents were predominantly in a contemplation stage. These results may guide to overweight prevention strategies based on stage of behavioral change.
