Risk of lethality due to nosocomial infections in a tertiary-level hospital

Abstract

Background: Healthcare associated infections (HAI) formerly known as nosocomial infections, constitute one of the main causes of hospital morbidity and mortality. The objective of this work was to estimate the risk of dying of those patients hospitalized in a tertiary-level hospital, when deaths are related to the most frequent HAIs in our environment.

Methods: An analysis of a historical cohort of HAIs was carried out by the Epidemiology Division of the hospital, from 2012 to 2017. The incidence and probability of death due to HAI was estimated and compared with other causes, analyzing the variables age, birth cohort and period of lethality.

Results: The incidence of HAIs between 2012 and 2017 was 27.9 to 31.5 HAI per 1000 stay days, the probability of having a HAI when being in the Intensive Care Unit was 3.51 (IC95%: 2.93-4.20) p <0.01, the lethality due to ventilator associated pneumonia compared to other causes in 2016 had a relative risk (RR) of 6.06 (95% CI: 2.91-12.6), and for urinary tract infection associated with catheterization, the RR was 4.01 (95% CI: 1.59-10.09).

Conclusions: HAIs continue to be an important public health problem in our environment; It is important to redirect efforts to reduce them in the medium and short term.
