Abstract
Fortunately, it is increasingly common for scientific journals to require that manuscripts have been approved by an ethics committee and that informed consent has been obtained from participants.¹⁻³ However, the fact that an article states these requirements were met does not necessarily mean that the informed consent process was carried out appropriately. As Dr. José Luis Sandoval Gutiérrez rightly points out, while we do not question the good intentions of researchers, we recognize that obtaining truly informed consent involves several challenges.
The first challenge is to include all necessary information using a limited number of words and simple language. The second challenge, in our experience as clinical researchers, is ensuring that consent is not obtained by the treating physician—that is, it must be obtained by someone not involved in the patient's care.
