Abstract

COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by a coronavirus called SARS-CoV-2 that was unknown until before the reported viral pneumonia outbreak in Wuhan, China in December 2019. Since different age groups are susceptible to infection, including newborns, the objective of this article is to review the scientific literature available in the PubMed database in English language until April 21, 2020, on the epidemiological and clinical aspects in newborns with suspected or confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection, as well as the recommendations for their management. In general, symptoms in newborns are milder (may even be asymptomatic) and the prognosis more favorable compared to adults. However special precautions are required to reduce the potential for mother-to-child transmission and to reduce the possibility of complications in symptomatic neonates.
