Resumen
El aumento en la esperanza de vida en las últimas décadas ha generado un notable crecimiento en la población adulta mayor, lo que ha dado lugar a una transición demográfica sin precedentes y ha implicado altos costos para el sistema de salud. En respuesta a esta situación, el Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS) implementó el Plan Geriátrico Institucional GeriatrIMSS, una estrategia integral diseñada para atender a las personas con mayor vulnerabilidad fisiológica y una alta prevalencia de enfermedades no transmisibles. Este plan busca fortalecer las capacidades operativas del IMSS y reorientar procesos y servicios para ofrecer una respuesta adecuada a las necesidades específicas de este grupo poblacional, con lo que mejora así la atención médica a los derechohabientes de edad avanzada. GeriatrIMSS se basa en 4 pilares fundamentales: prevención (PREVENIMSS), atención geriátrica integral, educación e investigación. Con esta estrategia, el IMSS se posiciona a la vanguardia internacional en el cuidado de las personas mayores al abordar sus principales problemas de salud y proporcionarles una atención preventiva, integral e interdisciplinaria. Este enfoque tiene como objetivo mejorar la calidad de la atención y aumentar la satisfacción tanto de los usuarios como de sus familias. El propósito de este artículo fue presentar el desarrollo, la estructura y el funcionamiento del Modelo de Atención Geriátrica Institucional GeriatrIMSS.
